The word on the street is you know everything about R&B. While there are many well versed in today’s renditions of throwback classics, there are a lot of hidden industry secrets many aren’t aware about. R&B as a genre has been around for decades dating back to the 1940s which allows the best kept secrets to stay secret, but we’re letting a few cats out of the bag. Here are few R&B facts you probably didn’t know:

1. Before he was famous, Ne-Yo wrote Mario’s hit song ‘Let Me Love You’.

2. Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopez’s casket is engraved with her verse from hit TLC song ‘Waterfalls’.

3.Rihanna’s hit single ‘Umbrella’ was written with Britney Spears in mind, but her label rejected it.

4. Kelly Rowland has sold over 27 million records as a solo artist. (recognize sis ok?)

5. Aaliyah was originally cast as Jessica Alba’s ‘Honey’, but passed away before filming began.

6. R Kelly wrote Michael Jackson’s ‘You Are Not Alone’.

7.  The majority of songs on Alicia Keys’ 2001 album ‘Songs In A Minor’ are NOT in A Minor. (what a joke)
8.  Amerie’s label refused to release ‘1 Thing’, so she leaked it herself, getting it radio airplay. (and she’s the cutest pregnant person ever)

9.L.A Reid offered Chris Brown a recording contract on the day they met, but he turned the offer down.
10. Brandy and Snoop Dogg are first cousins.

BONUS: Mary J Blige is the only artist to have won Grammys in the R&B, Rap, Pop, and Gospel fields.
